Complete wooden treasure box with embossed red seal from Alsop & Co. recovered from the S.S. Central America shipwreck. It is 13 x 7 x 5.5 inches. This special treasure box was recovered from the gold room, probably in the middle, where it would have been protected from the elements. It is special because the embossed wax seal is still easily readable as // Alsop & Co. //, who were the shippers to New York. The recipient was written in large black letters on the top, now illegible, such that all you can read is // & Co. //. It was the only complete treasure box salvageable from the S.S. Central America shipwreck and the only complete treasure box extant from the 1850s California Gold Rush period when millions of dollars of gold ingots, coins, and nuggets were sent eastward from California every two weeks.

Provenance: SS Central America Collection
