Very rare exchange note from Alsop & Co., San Francisco. Dated June 4, 1856. Alsop & Co. was one of the earliest San Francisco banks, opening a branch on California Street on August 6, 1851. In 1852, they advertised as local representatives of Duncan, Sherman & Co., a renowned banking firm in New York. This exchange note is issued to Duncan, Sherman & Co. Nice vignette of three sailing ships. A treasure box from Alsop & Co. was recovered from the S.S. Central America and sold in our SSCA Auction. This is an extremely rare note in fine condition.
