Basin/Cataract Mining District. Incorporated in Montana Territory in 1879. Cert. # 1993, issued to A.M. Foley in 1881 for 100 shares. Signed by Michael Snow, vice president, and by Robt. F. Crooke, Secretary. Vignette top of mill site at the foot of pointed hill, with small train and trees in foreground. Another vignette at bottom of miners working underground. Black border and print. Uncancelled. Printer: American BNCo. N.Y. Measures 7" x 11". In 1883 the company sold the comet and Alta mines and several others to the Helena Mining and Reduction Company. The Comet was one of the company's main producers, and it's major production occurred between 1883-1893. By 1907 the Montana Consolidated Copper Company controlled the property, deepening the Comet;s mine shaft to 600 feet and continuing to mine for 20 more years. The property changed hands again in 1926 and was then owned by the Basin Montana Tunnel Company. They constructed a 200-ton flotation mill, which was closed and dismantled in 1941.
