Lot of 10 billheads and correspondence from the Alta Montana Company. dated 1880 - 1881. While being headquartered in New York City, the company owned the Alta Mine on Alta Mountain overlooking the town of Wickes, MT. When a second discovery of silver was made at the Alta Mine in 1869, Wickes became a quintessential American West boomtown. It was named after William Wickes, an engineer with the Alta Mining Company who eventually became President and Managing Director of the Alta Montana Company. Of special interest are two statements of "B. Bullion" forwarded to the Omaha Smelting and Refining Company which include assay charts estimating gold and silver content and value drawn from the mine. Some 30 miles of tunnels are believed to have been created for the Alta Mine producing silver estimated up to $32 million. Today, Wickes is a ghost town located in Jefferson County in west central MT where a few residents still live.
