Gold or gold plate Ambrotype gold frame. Marked Hamilton/San Francisco. About 2x2.5" with 4 side edges, 2" and 2.5" each with some degradation. Conserved by Paul Messier. Charles F. Hamilton was born in Ireland and arrived in San Francisco in 1849. He claimed to have been the first to introduce the stereo daguerreotype to San Francisco. In 1856, he was in the partnership of Hamilton & (George) McKnown, 163 Clay St. However, in 1857, the time of SSCA, he was back to working alone. That year, he entered 23 of his photos into the First Industrial Exhibition of the Mechanics' Institute of San Francisco, winning 3rd prize and a certificate of merit. In May 1858, he moved to a location on Washington Street. That year, he again submitted his work to Industrial Exhibition of the Mechanics' Institute of San Francisco, and won a gold medal. The judges praised "the delicacy and transparency of the shadows and the good taste and judgment apparent in the positions and accessories." He was active in SF from 1852-1869. In 1866, he served as a trustee of the San Francisco Photographic Artists' Association. In 1869, he left photography and became a real estate agent. (Palmquist)
