Unidentified ambrotype, about 2.5x2". Case frame, glass and identifying paper by AP Critchlow. Frame and glass 3x2.5". Conserved by Paul Messier. Alfred Critchlow, of Florence, Massachusetts, held a patent for hinges for picture cases (No. 15,915 in 1856, reissued No. 456 in 1857). In 1854, Critchlow partnered with SL Hill and IS Parsons to form AP Critchlow & Company. They manufactured papier machÈ buttons and "Union" cases for daguerreotypes and ambrotypes. In 1868, Critchlow sold out of the firm. A "Union Case" is an example of an early thermoplastic technology produced from about 1855 to 1865. A mixture of shellac and wood fibers were pressed into a steel mold.
