This collection of American Blackface Minstrelsy dates from the 1890's to 1940's. There is an empty matchbook from the Cafe Society that claims to be the first integrated nightclub in the United States, unlike the Cotton Club that featured black performers but excluded black customers. Billie Holiday closed her sets there with "Strange Fruit" and did not return to the stage for an encore leaving the audience to contemplate the meaning of her song. There are two vinyl records: "I'se Goin from the Cottonfield" by Frank Crumit 1925 fair condition, and "At the Levee on Revival Day" by Collins and Harlan VG condition, both 78 rpm. There are advertisements for products that feature blacks along with a number of Aunt Jemima advertisements in this collection. There is a music books: "Blackface and Music" by Dailey Paskman and the Radio Minstrels, publishing date 1935; "Honey-Time" Minstrels by Chas. Morton; and "Hot Lips" by Henry Busse, Henry Lange, and Lou Davis. This period represents entertainment for both whites and blacks that may defy a reasonable explanation today.
