This is stock no. 1489, issued to Catharine A. Thornton on July 2, 1855 for 5 shares. This piece is signed by Secretary, William Fargo, President Henry Wells as well as Treasurer Alex Holland. Holland was John Butterfield's son-in-law. This is capital stock, 7,500 shares. There is a lovely vignette of a locomotive in the center on the stock. The printer is identified as Baker & Duyckinck. This piece measures 10.90" x 6.70." The piece has some fading throughout and two large creases. Not cancelled. In 19th century America, the stagecoach ruled the day; those who controlled the mail, controlled the game.
