Signed by William Fargo as Secretary, Henry Wells as President. and Alex Holland as treasurer. Not cancelled! This is an important piece from the Wells Fargo Butterfield business family. Black border and print, locomotive vignette. Printed by John H. Duyckinck, NY. 6.75 x 11" John Butterfield and William Fargo were two of three founders of the American Express company (along with Henry Wells). Butterfield also founded the Butterfield Overland Express and from 1858 to 1861 operated a stage route running from St. Louis to San Francisco, connecting California to the growing nation. Alex Holland was the son-in-law of Butterfield.
