Choice Western autograph piece! No. 1205, issued for two shares to James D. Watson on November 28th, 1854. Signed by Henry Wells as president, William Fargo as secretary, and Alex Holland as treasurer. Not cancelled. Locomotive vignette. Folds and heavy toning, as normally seen with these certificates. (Holland was John Butterfield's son-in-law). In 19th century America, the stagecoach ruled the day; those who controlled the mail, controlled the game. The American Express Company formed in 1850 after the express company owners Henry Wells, William Fargo and John Butterfield merged into one company.
