American Express Company, Capital Stock 5,000 shares at left, shares $100 each at right. Certificate #481 for two shares to William R. Osborn, New York, Dec. 1, 1853 signed by Henry Wells as President, William G Fargo as Secretary and Alex Holland as secretary. Period 1 certificate, thought to be among the first printed certificates but thee third Capital Stock issue. Exceptionally clean, uncancelled, easily the finest of the Period 1 certificates by condition, not endorsed on reverse. A note on the back indicates Osborn may have held 19 shares. Nothing found readily on Osborn, one of the early outsiders allowed to purchase stock in Am Ex. This certificate pre-dates the two specimens sold by R.M. Smythe more than 15 years ago.
