Very rare. Dateline New York January 15, 1838. Issued for 372 pounds, signed by Crooks. Vignette of beaver! 4 x 8" The American Fur Company was founded in 1808 by John Jacob Astor to control the U.S. fur trade, challenging Canadian competitors like the Hudson's Bay and North West companies. It quickly became the dominant American trading enterprise, establishing posts throughout the Great Lakes, upper Mississippi, and Missouri River regions, and eventually in the Rocky Mountains. By the 1830s competition, declining beaver populations, and changing fashions led to its decline, and Astor sold the company in 1834, marking the end of its fur trade dominance.
