Black border and print, with Safety & Dispatch vignette featuring busy port scene with stagecoach, ship, and train cars. Printed by John H. Duyckink, NY. Five cent adhesive revenue stamp with tied cancel attached at upper right. Pinholes, folds, light wear. 8.75 x 12.25" This company was the consolidation of the American Express Company and the Merchants Union Express Company. Near the close of the Civil War, Merchants Union Express was created specifically to compete with American Express and the Wells-Fargo-Butterfield-Livingston business family. The companies merged on November 25, 1868.
