This company was the consolidation of the American Express Company and the Merchants Union Express Company. Near the close of the Civil War, Merchants Union Express was created specifically to compete with American Express and the Wells-Fargo-Butterfield-Livingston business family. The companies merged on November 25, 1868. American Express Company returned to its old name in 1873.
