Beautiful color lithograph. "Chase & Bachelder's American Museum of Art." Printed by Stafford & Co. Nottingham. Red and blue print at the top. Image takes up over half of the lithograph: an interpretation of John Gast's 1872 painting "American Progress." We see a flying lady, representing Manifest Destiny, guiding the settlers across the wilderness West as she lays down telegraph wire. All sorts of characters: cowboys, miners, multiple trains, and Native Americans. Gast's painting used light and shadow to emphasize the heroic nature of the movement West. This litho is a more colorful and bright vision. Measures 37" x 27 1/2." Condition: soiling around the edges, smudges throughout, red smear top right, fold across whole litho about 1/3 of the way up from bottom, right edge a little rough. Would look fantastic framed.
