American River Water & Mining Company stock certificate, No. 4, for Mormon Island, Sacramento County, issued to Mepis Barrett(?) for 1 share ($250 per share) on September 14, 1854. Vignette of man in toga, sitting atop and leaning on bales of hay with a shovel leaning in the foreground (center upper).

This certificate is pre-printed, not manuscript, and is an excellent, rare piece of California gold rush history.

Gold was discovered at Mormon Island, near Folsom, in March 1848 by W. Sidney, S. Willis, and Wilford Hudson, and was California's first major gold strike after James W. Marshall's discovery at Coloma in January 1848 starting the California gold rush. The town of Mormon island had 2,500 residents in 1853 and was destroyed by fire in 1856, from which is was not rebuilt.
