Certificate No. 168 issued on July 20th, 1855 to F. B. French for one share. Signed by President, A. P. Cather and Secretary, C. T. H. Palmer. Palmer, a banker in Folsom, operated the Wells Fargo office and adjacent assay office in the same town. Pen cancelled. Vignette of Mercury figure. Lithographer Britton & Rey. Mormon Island was located on the South Fork of the American River, three miles from the junction with the North Fork. It was actually a sand bar, not an island. According to Gudde, it was the first regular gold camp after the discovery at Sutter's Mill. Two Mormons discovered gold at the spot on March 2, 1848. According to Gudde the 1850 census lists forty-two miners living at Dotons Bar and another forty-two at Dotons Bar and nearby Longs bar. Hutchings describes it as a very busy little town in 1855, after it obtained water from the North Fork Canal. The same source argues that discoveries at this place actually started the Gold Rush. Both Mormon Island and Dotons Bar are now under Folsom Lake. (Ref. PA11-12-12-69 P140) State: California City: Doton's Bar Date: 1855 FHWAC#: 41373
