Four spectacular, emerald-cut gemstones made of Ametrine, a naturally occurring combination of purple Amethyst in contact with yellow Citrine, both variations of quartz. Weights are 6.00, 6.32, 7.68, and 7.74 ct (total for the lot is 27.74 ct), and the colors of all four gems are split right down the middle with violet-purple Amethyst and golden-yellow Citrine in direct contact without any clear quartz between. These appear to be from the Anahi Mine in southeast Bolivia, the only commercial producer of Ametrine, which also goes by the name of Bolivianite as an homage to the material becoming the national gemstone of Bolivia. The golden-yellow color of Citrine is believed to be caused by Fe3+ ions distributed within the quartz. The purple color or Amethyst is attributed to the presence of Fe3+ ions in the quartz which have been oxidized to Fe4+ by long exposure to natural radioactive decay of potassium 40 in adjacent rocks. Finding the two saturated colors in direct contact is rare and contributes to the popularity of these gemstones.
