Four polished ammonite fossils, all from the goniatitida order as determined by the smooth, undulating form of the suture patterns between the septa (chambers) of the shell. Smallest is 2.5 x 2 x 1 inches, and the largest is about 6 x 5 inches still in the surrounding matrix. The largest ammonite is displayed with an adjacent orthoceras fossil. Both are known from the Middle Devonian period. The name ammonite comes from the similarity of its shape to curled horns of a ram, from which the first century Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder called these fossils ammonis cornua, or horns of Ammon -- an Egyptian god often portrayed wearing ram's horns. The orthoceras name means straight horn, with ortho meaning straight, and ceras being derived from the Greek word for horn. All are beautiful display pieces individually or as a group. We are even adding a casting of a trilobite (not a real fossil) for good measure.
