Ancestral Puebloan Anasazi Puerco Black on Red Pottery Bowl. c. 800-1200 A.D. This bowl has been broken and repaired with all pieces. Only tiny chips at break lines are missing.
Puerco Valley in the Upper San Juan Basin, the Central Anasazi branch of the Southern Cibola tradition. The hard, red-slipped vessel has geometric designs painted in a black mineral pigment with interlocking frets and triangles. Northern San Juan or Mesa Verde Red Wares reflect distinct decorated pottery forms produced from the Early Pueblo I to Middle Pueblo II periods. Southeastern Utah is assumed to be the principal source of San Juan Red Ware vessels. Gray core is visible on this piece, which may indicate the use of carbonaceous gray clays that are high in iron content. Approx 5.5" x 11.5" across top.
