This prison Pass was issued at the Old Capitol Prison to visit Captain Henry Wirz, the commanding Confederate officer in charge of the Andersonville Prison. We was charged with "murder, in violation of the laws of war". General C.C. Augur issued the pass to Mr. Schrade, Wirz's attorney. General Augur personally issued this pass to insure that there would be no mistrial, assassination attempt, or suicide attempt. Henry Wirz would be hanged for his crimes three days later. He was responsible for the deaths of 13,000 Union soldiers under his care. The pass measures 5.25 in. X 7 in. with General C.C. Augur's clear autograph, Wirz's name in clear script, wrinkled right edge.
