Andersonville prisoner John January survived scurvy and gangrene by cutting off his own foot with a pocket knife. Living until 1901, he is pictured here wearing a GAR ribbon and no feet. The surgeons at Andersonville refused to do surgery on John January knowing that he would soon expire. However, the rotting flesh made it possible for him to perform his own amputation.
