John Winder, a West Point graduate, was assigned to run the prison system for the Confederates. Winder's signature is at the bottom of a letter to Miss Maggie Halls. Miss Halls was asking for advice to run north to see her family in (Union occupied) Alexandria, Va. John Winder's letter advices her to run the blockade. Indicating that she needed to travel by sea. Winder's signature is visible dated 1863 as Brigadier General. Two letters; an interesting read. John's letter has faded with time, but still readable. [ New York
