This lot of family letters are written by Louis W. Stevenson before and during the Civil War. An autographed card and tintype photo are also included. L.W. Stevenson was a Private in the 7th New York Militia in 1861 and later a 2nd Lt. in the 176th New York Infantry. He describes army life in his war years letter. The most compelling letter to his aunt is dated Nov. 10th, 1865 where he personally witnesses Major Henry Wirz's hanging in great detail. He would have a personal interest in this hanging after being wounded and surviving imprisonment. "Wirz's behavior in the coolest manner. He walked with a firm step......conversation with his counsel in a quite, cool manner." He would also write" "The day was lively___ the God(d)ess of Liberty__ looked down on him from the dome of the Capitol, very affirmingly which added solemnly to the occasion."
