Extra rare location; extremely rare format, extremely rare engraver! Location printed on certificate: Spring Valley, Devil's Gate District, Lyon County, N.T. A close look at this stock will show some unique set up (lady vignette, shares, engraver location on stock, etc.). The engraver was a San Franciscan name Durbin VanVleck. He was a wood carver and outside of this stock certificate very little of his work remains (Google search). The Anna was incorporated January 9th, 1864. Dateline Gold Hill, January 27th, 1864. No. 54, issued for 5 shares to P.F.W. Black. Signed by L.A. Hauck, secretary, and the president, Sig'd Ettinger - a Virginia City grocer. Not cancelled. Very ornate logo written on a ribbon vignette. Three other vignettes on the stock: portrait of a woman (left); miner panning for gold (center); and eagle's head (bottom). Gold Hill News Print. Folds, toning, a few small stains. This company is listed in Collins with their office in Gold Hill. L.A. Hauck is listed as secretary for multiple mining companies and appears to be associated with Hart's Saloon in Gold Hill also. Not in Filer. Spring Valley was located about 1/1/2 miles below Silver City, three miles west of Dayton and just above the Daney Mine and the small camp of Caneyville. Ansari notes two mills were present: Daney Mill (1860s) and Spring Valley Mill (1870s). According to Nevada and Her Resources (1894): "The ledge is strong and has been opened on the surface by well known gold producers at many different points from Spring valley to Devil's Gate a distance of about two miles. A tunnel following the course of the ledge from Spring valley to Devil's Gate would strike the Silver City mines at a depth of about 500 feet and would open an immense mineral section through almost the entire length of which luring inducements would be offered the miner to prospect and it would afford employment to at least a thousand men It is in every respect equal to the Pine Grove and Silver Peak properties." Stretch, 1867, notes that several of the abandoned mines in the Spring Valley District are receiving new attention, with some being relocated and a ten stamp mill being erected (pg. 14). Additional information on the Spring Valley, VanVleck, Hauck, Ettinger and mine is included.
