The Department of the Missouri was a command echelon of the United States Army in the 19th century and a sub division of the Military Division of the Missouri that functioned through the Indian Wars. The Department of Missouri resulted from the reorganization and breakup the Department of the West on November 9, 1861, after Abraham Lincoln fired John C. Frémont when he would not rescind his order emancipating the slaves of Missouri and imposing martial law on the state. This report was written by E. H. Ruffner, First Lieutenant of Engineeers, U. S. A. (on the staff of the general commanding the Deparment of the Missouri. Appendix SS of the Annual Report of the Chief of Engineers for 1878. Printed by Government Printing Office, Washington, D. C. the report deals with early mining, agriculture, lines of communication, botany, etc. Illustratrations of elevations and sketches of the Rio de los Pinos. a very nice fold-out map of part of Colorado (10.75" x 14") Another fold-out of map shows "Lines of Communication between Conejos and Pagosa Springs, Colorado"(14" x 19") another fold-out shows a Plan of Tunnel and Drifts of the Pride of the West Lode. Back of report has two plates ofillustrations of butterflies. Tan soft cover loose from binding, back cover missing. ((9.25" x 5.75") Used condition.
