Small piece cut from a anode copper ingot, 2.2 x 1.4 x 1.3 inches, weighing 18.2 ounces (avoir), and a copper slab, 3 x 2 x .25-inches, 9.1 ounces, cut from a refined copper cathode. Anode copper comes from the last stage of purification at a copper smelter. Oxygen is blown into molten copper in an anode furnace to oxidize and remove impurities from the melt. This is poured into large flat molds to produce copper anodes that are then purified further at a refinery with electrolysis. High currents of electricity move copper atoms from the anode through a solution of copper sulfate and sulfuric acid to be deposited onto a thin copper starter sheet. The cathode becomes thicker as pure copper builds up. The final copper cathode is 99.99% pure or better.
