Low Divide District, Del Norte Co. (printed upper and lower left). Inc. July 1863. Dateline San Francisco, Sept. 16th, 1863. No. 156, issued for 25 shares to D. Tourtellotte. Signed by president Wm. H. Sharp and secretary John Hunt Jr. Not cancelled. Elk and mountain vignette, as well as floral pattern on the left border. Lith. by Drouaillet, SF. Folds, toning. The Low Divide District is in the Smith River basin at the head of Copper Creek. It is the oldest copper mining camp in Del Norte County. Between 1860 and 1870, there was a prosperous mining camp located in the district. FH notes this may have been mining a massive sulfide deposit. This company is not mentioned by Lowell in his Mines and Mineral Resources of Del Norte County, Humboldt County, Mendocino County, but the district is described. William H. Sharp is listed as US District Attorney in Langley 1863. John Hunt Jr. is listed as a clerk with the district attorney's office. Ken Prag Collection
