Lariat Length Double Strand Elegant Baroque Akoya Pearl Necklace. Made c1940s-1950s. Incorporates a 7/8" 14 Karat gold hidden-clasp, accented with line engraving in a star-burst motif. Clasp features 6 round (not baroque) smaller (4.6-5.9mm) round, Akoya pearls, described as "eye-clean". Solid 14K Gold Clasp has 2 safety catches and is marked "14K" and "P.C." Double strand necklace is approx. 30" in length with 174 baroque (off round) Akoya pearls approx.9.00Lx7.00Dmm. in size. Strung pearls are closely matched in color and size, slightly blemished with an excellent luster and nacre quality and have creamy orangish white body color with a moderate to strong peacock orient. (Orient is a shimmer of iridescent rainbow colors on or just below a pearl's surface, prized by pearl lovers.) Under magnification or close inspection by a trained eye, the pearls on the clasp differ slightly in color, luster and nacre. The pearls on the clasp appear to be of different origin than the strung pearls.

Cold to touch, these pearls have been appraised by a Gemologist, but HAVE NOT BEEN X-RAYED to definitively determine origin! The style of this necklace and clasp indicate it was made c1940-1950 so it is assumed by Appraiser that these pearls are cultured, from the same time period. (Pearls originating post 1900 are assumed cultured, as naturally occurring pearls were all cultivated by the 20th century) The appraisal states "Cultured has been assumed." However, it is possible these pearls are much older. We HIGHLY RECOMMEND the buyer arrange to have this necklace x-rayed by a professional to determine if these pearls are natural. Japanese saltwater pearls with unknown provenance, irregularities in size and shape, differences in overtones and randomly occurring natural blemishes meet the criteria required by experts for x-ray analysis, the only known method to determine if pearls originated naturally. The last known naturally occurring pearls were cultivated 50+ years before this necklace was made (as determined by style and clasp) but it is not uncommon for the most beautiful and valuable pearls to be restrung many times and a modern (for the time) clasp added. Natural pearls are incredibly rare and exponentially more valuable than the rarest and most exquisite cultured pearls. These pearls have all the tell-tale signs and characteristics of natural pearls, lacking only the provenance and a pre-1900 antique clasp.

Overall weight of necklace is 63.70dwt. Included in lot is a Professional Appraisal from Trademark Jewelry performed on 7/1/2022 by Brian Rocca, Graduate Gemologist, with insurance replacement value documented at $8,944.00, assuming the pearls are cultured. This necklace was professionally restrung at the time of appraisal. The owners of Trademark Jewelry,
