Portrait of Apache Chief James A. Garfield, number 53412, by photographer William Henry Jackson, copyright 1899 by Detroit Photographic Co. Jackson was an American Civil War veteran who became well known for his paintings, illustrations, and photography of the people and places across the United States and around the world. In 1897 he sold his entire collection of negatives to the Detroit Publishing Company and became company president in 1898. Today his collective work of tens of thousands of negatives are stored in the US Library of Congress and the Colorado Historical Society. Jicarilla Apache Chief James A. Garfield may have adopted that name after receiving a Peace Medal (seen around his neck in this image) from US President James Garfield. He later added the surname Velarde. Image size is approx 7 x 9 inches; matted, glazed, and framed in medium-tone oak at 11 x 14 inches.
