Pale, green, and beautiful in the rough and when faceted, these two minerals are similar in color with very different origins. Peridot is the gem form of olivine, a magnesium-iron silicate that forms under intense heat and pressure of the upper mantle. Apatite is a calcium phosphate and the mineral is found in our teeth and bones. The two minerals are similar in appearance, and we believe we got them sorted out correctly. There are nine small cylindrical plastic boxes with cut and faceted stones of apatite and peridot; one small plastic box of five, tumble-polished peridots from Arizona; two natural apatite crystals, 4.3 and 3.1 grams; two rough peridot stones, 4.1 grams total; two small bags of rough peridot stones, 10 grams total; and a 3.43 carat, cut and polished, oval apatite gemstone from Kenya. A very nice lot for jewelry making.
