This paroled prisoner pass was written the day after the surrender by General Lee at the Appomattox Court House, for Private John Harris of the Virginia Infantry. The signature is not in Grant's handwriting. It is signed by Col. William Beal of Co. A, Provost, who had the authority to use General Grant's signature. The pass is nonetheless a real document for the safe passage for a veteran to return safely home. As outlined in a speech several weeks earlier, Lincoln directed Grant to let them off easy, sensing that the South would surrender soon. To have "malice toward none, with charity for all" and commence a national healing. Over 30,000 such passes were issued starting on April 10th and printed around the clock. 2.5 in. X 7 in. Framed for display at 7 in. X 15in. ( ref. https://www.nps.gov/apco/learn/historyculture/paroling-the-army-of-northern-virginia.htm). Please see the photograph for more detail.
