Abe Ruef was a manipulative scoundrel and criminal, who went to prison for bribery and other charges after the 1906 earthquake. He was at the center of much corrupt city government. He arranged for a "puppet" "colleague" Eugene Schmitz, to run for mayor. Ruef wrote his speeches and basically told him what to do and say, meanwhile garnering graft and corruption as his manager. The archive consists of a signed manuscript (s) (8pp), signed receipt, numerous photos (17), including some touched up for publication; a large delicate typescript entitled "Ruef's Statement". The entire file is from the Schmitz family, the one he coerced and manipulated. Accompanied by a book by Lately Thomas about Ruef.(1962)
