This bank note is made out to F. J. Wattron of Holbrook, Arizona in 1904 for $43. 45. Signed by Jim Houch also of Holbrook. Sized at 3 in. X 8 in. J. Houch would eventually become part owner of Wattron's drug store via a card game. Wattron was also the local Sheriff in Navajo County from 1897-1900, and one of his duties was to notify other sheriffs in Arizona of any hangings so as to finalize any searches for the hombres. The reproduction notifications enclosed here are notice 1 and 2 for the hanging of George Smiley for murder. The first notice was published widely, unintended by Wattron, and later criticized for the brutality of law enforcement in his state. The second notice with a black border is to inform the state officials to consider the notice in the state by-laws. F.J. Wattron was accused of having a dark humor and as skilled with the pen as well has his shoot irons.
