Mowry, Sylvester; Arizona and Sonora; the Geography, History and Resources of the Silver Region of North America. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1864, New York Hardcover, 251 pages, no Jacket. 3rd Edition after the first of 1859 and enlarged with considerable more material. Mowry's work is considered an important piece of literature on the mining industry of Arizona, and parts of New Mexico, Colorado and Mexico. He provides a description to the regions geography, geology, early mining, and industry in the first chapters. The remaining chapters provide descriptions of the mines by region. Especially interesting for those interested in the early mining operations of Arizona because of the descriptions of the silver and copper mines in Arizona and Sonora, describing the areas and conditions surrounding the mines, the product found there and the labor available. Excellent descriptions of Arizona and Sonoma are also included. This third edition includes the development since 1859 of the mines. This edition also does not contain the map which appeared in the second edition, nor is it apparently called for by either Sabin or Howes. The author went west with the U. S. Army and soon thereafter became the operator/owner of the Mowry Silver Mine. Frontispiece. Original dark purple cloth binding now looks more brown than purple. Text is clean and snug, hinges are tight. Some discoloration and spotting of cloth, some spotting and staining of margins, blank leaf following text at back removed, binding partially missing. Arizona
