Two page manuscript letter from Musten (sp?) to Major D.H. Rucker, US Army, Albuquerque. Dec. 7, 1855. Fort Fillmore was built in 1851 to protect California bound gold seekers from the Apache which were constantly attacking. It was located in the sand hills above the Rio Grande. This letter is written by an officer to a Major in a very familiar "tone." He needs supplies- a platform scale, buckets, etc. "I have not had a water bucket for a year". "I am delighted with the climate" On a more serious note, the author states "The treaty with the Apache Indians has turned out exactly as General said it would at the time it was made & I have no doubt there will have to be a campaign made against them. I am of the opinion that our Indian affairs will now be properly managed, until the commanding officers of the Military department are made superintendents of the Indian affairs and the commanding officers of Post Indian Agents.. Our last accounts from below (Vera Cruz) say that a force is trying to overthrow General Traist (sp?) in Chihuahua"

Rare and early letter from an important California way station. State: New Mexico City: Fort Fillmore Date: HWAC# 84875
