"Asbury Harpending (September 14, 1839 – January 26, 1923) was an adventurer & financier in San Francisco, California, Mexico, & New York City. he was involved in mining, real estate & railroads, & founded the town of Havilah, California, which became a boom town in 1865. After he was involved in the Diamond hoax of 1872 which was a swindle in which a pair of prospectors sold a false American diamond deposit to prominent businessmen in San Francisco & New York City. It also triggered a brief diamond prospecting craze in the western United States, in Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming, & Colorado. He later moved to New York City & became involved in investment & speculation on Wall Street. In 1913, Harpending published his biography, The Great Diamond Hoax & Other Stirring Episodes in the Life of Asbury Harpending - An Epic of Early Californian." from wikipedia [
