From the classic Green River Formation near Kemmerer in western Wyoming, comes this artfully prepared Asineops fish fossil. The fish is about 6.25 inches long in a block of fine-grained rock that is approx. 8.75 x 7 x 1 inch. Label on the front edge identifies the fossil and its locale. Green felt glued onto the back. We believe this specimen to be real, but whoever prepared it used a dark brown dye to "artfully" enhance the outline the fish and went past the extent of the visible bones. The entire slab has been painted in a lighter color, and when this surface layer was scraped from a small area of the right edge, the fine sediment is revealed, not plaster. It is also heavier than a plaster model would be. When supported in the center and struck, the slab rings like a bell, as one would expect a hard rock slab to sound. A plaster model would make a dull thunk sound. The Green River formation material is easily cut on rock saw, leaving fairly smooth cut edges as seen on this piece. Generally, Green River fish fossils are commonly available at reasonable prices and not worth the effort to produce a fake. See discussions on the web about this kind of fossil preparation.
