Ten page handwritten letter dated February 13, 1877 on the letterhead of the Office of U.S. Assistant Treasurer, New York. Signed honorable Charles F. Conant who was assistant treasurer from July 1, 1874 until April 3, 1877. A lengthy discussion of gold versus notes as legal tender and the amount of gold held by the government. Comments on foreign trade relations and gold. Discussion of insuring $25-50 million of 4 1/2% bonds "would tend to cause gold to flow here from abroad...and would enable us to keep gold at home." Great letter about the domestic and international gold market.
