Rare. Inc. in New York, 1885. Lists mining claims on the left side: Atlantic, Marine, City, Occident, Bummer, and Jane Fisher Mines. No. 76, issued for 1,000 shares to secretary William Payne in 1886 in New York. Signed by Payne and president Edward Taylor. Not cancelled. Black border and print. Allegorical vignettes including bald eagle. Folds, discoloration. Surely named for John J. Astor of New York, a prominent member of the Astor family who died on Titanic in 1912. We find mention of this company's formation in 1885, but no location information. In April 1890, E&MJ reports that a company with the same name has formed to mine in San Juan County (with all different officers). An article from 1901 mentions a lawsuit with the company and says its claims were in the Eureka Mining District of San Juan County. A search for the mining claims listed on the certificate does not add any verification of this location.
