c.1880s Specimen stock. Orange border, black print, and vignette of Native Americans pointing down at train. Printed by ABN. Stamped Specimen over signature lines. Also hole punched. 7 x 16.25" (with attached stub). Folds, some toning. The Atlantic & Pacific, inc. in 1866, operated two disjointed segments: one connecting St. Louis, Missouri with Tulsa, Oklahoma, and the other connecting Albuquerque, New Mexico with Southern California. It was approved by Congress in 1866 as a transcontinental railroad connecting Springfield, Missouri and Van Buren, Arkansas with California. However, the central portion was never constructed. The two halves later became parts of the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway and Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway systems, now both merged into the BNSF Railway.
