This special set contains a 24- karat gold plated disk replica , and a silver treasure coin from the Atocha. Both are housed in the original mahogany box. Box is velvet lined with ship illustration on lid.The silver treasure coin is a Spanish real from a Mexico mint.
The following description is taken from the enclosed Certificate of Authenticity.
The 24- karat gold-plated disk is a replica of one of only seven gold disks that were recovered from the Atocha, which sank in 1622. The actual gold disk was one of the first gold artifacts recovered from the Atocha. shipwreck in an area called "The Bank of Spain."
When Cortez conquered the Aztecs of Mexico in 1520, he plundered their stores of precious metals, dramatically expanding the world's supply of hard currency. For the next 200 years, millions of dollars worth of gold and silver were shipped back to Spain. Because this expanded supply was controlled entirely by the Spanish, it increased Spain's power enormously.
The gold and silver bullion and coins recovered from the Atocha are helping historians unravel the history of Spain in the New World. By deciphering the markings on the silver and gold, and by delving into the cargo manifests, researchers can match the bullion or coins recovered to the merchants and passengers who shipped the goods.
The gold disk used to create this mold contained 438.5 grams of .875 pure gold-18 karats. The karat stamps show the purity of the gold in Roman numerals. This disk was stamped XVIII. The disk carries two mint mark strikes and shows where the tax seal was struck three times. There is also an assayer's bite, a small scoop of metal taken to test purity.
