This lot of 7 glass negatives, housed in what appears to be the original cardstock box, includes view of Austin, Gold Park, mining and mill scenes, and more. One envelope is marked M. Wards & Co. Rare shots. Located along Highway 50, called the Loneliest Road in America, and named for Austin, Texas, Austin was founded in 1862 as part of a silver rush reputedly triggered by a Pony Express horse who kicked over a rock. The first glass negative was produced in 1839 by John Herschel, the English mathematician, astronomer, chemist, experimental photographer and inventor. Herschel originated the use of the Julian day system in astronomy, named 7 moons of Saturn and 4 moons of Uranus, made many contributions to the science of photography, investigated color blindness, and studied the chemical power of ultraviolet rays.
