Francis E. Spinner (1802-1890) was a New York banker and politician appointed by President Abraham Lincoln as Treasurer of the United States in 1861, serving in that capacity until 1875. His distinctive and curious signature, cultivated in order to prevent forgery, appeared on all federal banknotes during his tenure as Treasurer. This $25,000 deposit letter was issued September 14, 1866, to the cashier of the National Mohawk Valley Bank.
