Newspaper clipping, 7 x 4 inch, of Ethel Waters portrait painted by Luigi Lucioni, is autographed by the famous actress and jazz singer. Signed, "Very Sincerely Ethel Waters," the clipping is announcing that by popular vote, Lucioni won first prize at the 1939 Carnegie International Exhibition for his portrait of Ethel Waters. Lucioni (1900 –1988) was an Italian American painter known for his still lifes, landscapes, and portraits. Several times Grammy Award winning Waters (1896-1977) was the second African American to be nominated for an Academy Award. She was the first African-American to star on her own television show and the first African-American woman to be nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award. The Huntsville (Alabama) Museum of Art obtained the original portrait of Waters in 2018. (Portion of scrapbook page clipping is glued to incorrectly states the date as 1943.)
