This signed letter is signed by abolitionist Gerrit Smith in April, 1854. He was the President of the Liberty Party which he created. He was a member of the "Secret Six"; a group of abolitionists that financed John Brown's Harper's Ferry raid. It was never intended to cause an insurrection, that would prove fatal to two of Brown's own sons. Smith's ambitions included the release of slaves, giving farm land to slaves, the Smith house was a safe house for the underground railroad, and finally financed the women's rights movement. 5 in. X 8 in. In very good condition. Signed clearly a the bottom. Please see photo for details. [
