Original handwritten letter by William Pitt to the Duke of Portland, England, dated January 1, 1796. Sent from Wimbledon. Writing faded and hard to read but introduction line reads My Dear Lord. Content of letter includes "he has not many qualities to recommend him for the situation in question or any other." Appears to be a letter relating to personnel matters. Note: cannot ascertain which William Pitt this is, but the Prime Minister of England in 1796 was William Pitt the Younger who presided over England during the Napoleonic Wars with France. He is known as "William Pitt the Younger" to distinguish him from his father, William Pitt the Elder, who also served as Prime Minister of Great Britain. He is the youngest man ever to hold this office.
