Ave Maria Gold Quartz Mine, inc. in 1851, Mariposa, California, cert. no 132 for 5 shares no. 23631 to no. 23635, signed by Committee members Kirk and Ward, and secretary R.C.Duke. Light blue paper with blue writing, 6.5" x 9.5".

This was one of the earliest hard rock mines in California and was first leased out by John C Fremont from his Mariposa Land Grant - a very early example of Stock Certificates in California.

The Ave Maria's place is verified by a letter from John Duncan and John Fremont on Dec 26, 1851. The letter clearly states, that the Ave Maria is located on the Mariposa Estate and on the Ave Maria River.[Ref: The Expeditions of John Charles Fremont, Vol 3, dited by Spence]. Today, the Ave Maria River is know for Stockton Creek[Ref:Gudde]. There was a small town by that name at the confluence of the Ave Maria and Mariposa. In Nov 1851, The Glasgow herald reported equipment was in place for mining operation to begin.
