Douglas Corrigan was an American aviator and aircraft mechanic who became famous for an unapproved flight from New York to Ireland in 1938. He had already made a transcontinental flight from Long Beach, California, to New York City and had filed a flight plan to return to Long Beach. However, he landed in County Dublin, Ireland after more than 28 hours in a $900 aircraft. This black and white postcard shows Corrigan standing with his arms folded beside his plane. Was he an aviation pioneer? Well, he accomplished by himself what Charles Lindberg had previous achieved with a first-rate airplane and significant financial backing. What Douglas Corrigan lacked in funding, he made up for in courage and cleverness. The press dubbed him "Wrong Way Corrigan," because he never admitted to intentionally going to Ireland, but claimed that he had gone the wrong way on his trip back to Long Beach and had to tough it out once he realized his mistake.
