This is a delightful display specimen of midnight-blue azurite crystals growing on a heavily oxidized breccia substrate. These sparkling blue crystals are visible in vugs and cavities on every side of this 3-1/2 x 3 x 3-inch specimen. Azurite is a copper-oxide mineral that often forms as secondary mineralization when copper-sulfide ore deposits naturally weather. Azurite is a hydrous copper carbonate, Cu3 (CO3)2 (OH)2 that can change spontaneously into green malachite on exposure to carbon dioxide in the open air over time. This degradation can be delayed by storing specimens out of drafts, bright lights, and sunshine. Some deep green malachite is visible on this specimen as well.
